Growth by Metro Area – Indeed.com:

Indeed.com publishes a monthly report of where the jobs are, giving insights into which job market is strongest and which is weakest. Indeed’s job market survey shows slightly stronger job advertising activity, demonstrating slow growth.

Indeed’s June 2010 (based on May results) survey of job advertisements show the job market is strongest in Washington DC, San Jose CA, Baltimore MD and NYC NY. Washington has been at the top of the list for a while, as Federal government spending has been high – San Jose shared the top spot with DC since April 2010. However, Baltimore and NYC improved in June to join DC and San Jose with a 1:1 ratio of unemployed per job advertisements. The top 10 job markets are geographically spread throughout the US (with the exception of the Southeast US). Hartford CT, Oklahoma City OK, Salt Lake City UT, Seattle WA, Boston MA, Milwaukee WI, Denver CO, Austin TX, San Antonio TX, San Fransisco CA, and (believe it or not) Cleveland OH are all at 1:2 ratio of unemployed to job advertisements.

At the opposite end of the spectrum is Los Vegas NV (#48, 1:6), Detroit MI (#49, 1:7) and Miami FL (#50, 1:8). Florida has the unfortunate distinction of having 4 of the worst 10 job markets – Tampa (#40, 1:5), Jacksonville (#42, 1:4), Orlando (#43, 1:5), and Miami (#50, 1:8). California has 3 of the worst 10 job markets – Sacramento (#45, 1:5), Riverside (#46, 1:5), and Los Angeles (#47, 1:6).

However, these ratios continue to improve month over month through 2010 – even in the hardest hit markets. This indicates that there is still job growth, but it’s also growing at a very slow pace.

Telecommunications firms remain top hiring companies with AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon still staffing actively. Retail continues staffing growth long after the holidays are over – Advance Auto Parts, Sears and Blockbuster were both top 10 hiring firms, while Kmart, Lowe’s and Macy’s were also in the top hiring firms.

Health care continues in a a strong recruiting mode as HCR ManorCare, UnitedHealth, DaVita, Genesis Healthcare, Kaiser Permanente, Quest Diagnostics, Kindred Healthcare and Amedisys Home Health were top job advertisers. Banking rounded out the list as JPMorgan Chase, Bank of America, TD Bank and Fifth Third Bank were staffing.

The retail, telecommunications, health care, business services, and hospitality verticals are the top industries currently hiring based on a survey of active job advertisements from the nations’ leading job boards.

Not only is this valuable for job seekers, but for business analysts, corporate strategists, marketers, salespeople, investment analysts, financial advisers, and others who are interested in companies experiencing growth. Despite the recession, these companies are all expanding.

Total Job Openings:
Retail continued to head the list as it continues staffing growth since before the holiday season. Advance Auto Parts, Sears, Lowe’s, Kmart and Blockbuster were all top 10 hiring firms, while Macy’s and Walmart were also in the top hiring firms. Telecommunications firms are still looking with AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon still staffing actively.

Health care continued strong hiring for the past half year, led by HCR ManorCare, Fresnius Medical Care, DaVita, Genzyme, Faulkner Hospital, UnitedHealth, Amedisys Home Health, Genesis Healthcare, Kindred Health Care, Quest Diagnostics and Kaiser Permanente and were 11 of the top 40 hiring companies. Business Service firms were next with IBM, Deloitte and CSC continuing to advertise for new hires.

Hospitality rounded out this week’s top employers, as Pizza Hut, Marriott and Hilton continued heavy job advertisements.

Defense increased hiring for staff this week as Raytheon and Army National Guard Health made the top 10, while ManTech and General Dynamics were included in the top job advertisers.

• Timing. Emails to 200 different companies were sent out late December 2009, inviting firms to participate in an online Source of Hire survey. All invited had corporate staffing responsibilities and direct access to their company’s SOH data.
• Scale. Results form 176,420 positions supplied the final 41 firms with about 1.8M US-based employees, employing 1,501 recruiters and sourcers are included in the report.
• Transparency/Confidentiality. While the annual survey requires respondents to provide contact information, we have never divulged the names of the firms participating in the survey. They do represent a cross-section of many industries, and many respondents are authentic industry leaders.

• Internal transfers and promotions were the source of 51% of ALL the full-time positions companies filled, on average, a significant increase over 2008.
• 30% of respondents do not know, and cannot even guess, the size of their contingent population, which averages 13.6% for do not know.
• Referrals make up 26.7% of all external hires. The yield for referrals is 1 hire for every 15 referrals, making this category the most efficient source.
• Hires attributed to job boards represent 13.2% of external hires. Monster continues to lose ground to Career Builder. Social media, while rapidly expanding as a strategy, is still in its early stages vis-a-vis attributed hires. Only about 500 hires can be attributed to social media. Direct sourcing activities are increasingly adopting social media tools and tactics. Corporate staffing is poised to expand social media initiatives rapidly in 2010.
• Hires attributed to the company Website are 22.3%.
• 2010 looks bright compared to 2009 hiring plans. This year only 10.8% predict further hiring reductions, 48% expect to grow, and the rest are holding steady.

Regions across the U.S. will see job growth in the first quarter of 2010. But the growth will be sporadic and many areas will continue to lag

The recession might be technically over, but unemployment is rising month after month even in most of the nation’s strongest job markets.

A full-fledged job recovery seems to be a long way away. But some metros are poised for significant job growth by the first quarter of next year. BusinessWeek.com teamed up with Moody’s Economy.com to identify America’s 25 next recovering job markets. These metros were ranked based on Economy.com’s projected job growth in the first three months of 2010.

Topping the list is Mount Vernon, Wash., a small town about 60 miles north of Seattle with just 48,000 workers. The town, which lost jobs quickly during the recession, could see a rebound, in part because tourism, retail, and hospitality will make a comeback as the economy improves. Additionally, the weak dollar will provide a boost to communities with international trading ports and metros that border Mexico, such as Brownsville, Tex. (a port town that is No. 4 on our list), and border town McCallen, Tex. (No. 3). Our list was also packed with towns that are closely linked to the energy industry (Billings, Mont., Houston, Tex., and Farmington, N.M.), college towns (College Station, Tex., Tuscaloosa, Ala., Auburn, Ala., and Lawrence, Kan.), and military towns (Columbus, Ga., Augusta, Ga., and Texarkana, Tex.).

None of the metros on the list experienced a housing bubble that had a disastrous pop. Miami, Las Vegas, Phoenix, and Stockton, Calif., will likely be in a funk long after many Texas metros are in growth mode.

“These are areas that had little or no housing cycle and stand to benefit from the renewed firmness in commodity prices,” said Chris Lefakis, an economist at Moody’s Economy.com. “This could be an export-lead recovery with the replenishment of inventory leading to a resurgence in manufacturing.”

Room for Growth in Manufacturing

The manufacturing sector has taken such a battering that it has a lot of room for improvement. Inventories have fallen to such low levels that manufacturers will have to increase production even to keep up with existing demand, Lefakis said.

A plant opening or just expanding can have a magnified impact on a small metro, giving a swift boost to the job market, said Joel Naroff, president of Naroff Economic Advisors in Holland, Pa. But job growth elsewhere mostly will be slow and incremental, he said. Companies will be cautious about hiring and will expand overtime hours and bring on temporary workers before making permanent hires.

The good news is that overtime pay and the increase in temp workers will push up wages nationwide, which could result in more consumer spending, he said.

“If the economy begins to grow, it will be enough [for companies] to add slowly to payroll,” Naroff said. “I’m not expecting a vigorous upturn.”

Travel, hospitality, and retail could see more dramatic growth. Throughout the recession, Americans have cut down on travel, eating out, and shopping. If the economy improves, they’ll add more entertainment to their budgets, he said.

“People might not go to Disney World,” said Naroff. “But they might start going out to dinner once week.”

New York City, which didn’t make our list, could also have a great year, especially now that Wall Street is giving out bonuses “like 2008 never existed,” he added.

The federal government will also play a key role in the recovery even as it begins to phase out tax incentives and other economic stimulus spending, Moody’s Economy.com Chief Economist Mark Zandi said on CNBC Nov. 3.

“Without the government, the consumer would be pulling back,” Zandi said. “By early next year job losses will abate … so we will start to see wage and salary growth and government can begin to pass that baton off [to the private sector]. But it will be a tricky handoff.”
