Nationwide job openings increased in March by 5 percent month-over-month and 4.3 percent year-over-year. Nationwide job competition also remained the same at a ratio of three unemployed persons for every one job opening.

“This year, we’re seeing real stability in the job market, and the increases across industries and metros are promising,” said Gautam Godhwani, CEO of SimplyHired.com. “With increasing employer confidence in the economy, job seekers should see steady opportunities in the coming months.”

Hiring increases in nearly all top metros.

Job openings increased in 49 of the 50 top metro areas in March, compared to 30 metros in February. Metros with the largest job growth include Albuquerque and Santa Fe (8.7 percent), Minneapolis (7.5 percent), West Palm Beach (7.4 percent), and Philadelphia (7.1 percent). Grand Rapids (-2.6 percent) was the only metro with a decline in job openings.

Military, construction jobs increase.

The construction industry shows continued growth for the third consecutive month with an 11.3 percent increase in job openings. Other industries experiencing double digit month-over-month growth in job openings include military (18 percent), media (11.6 percent) and travel (10.9 percent).

Sales, finance jobs decline.

Sales representative job openings decreased by 10.7 percent in March after a strong 53 percent increase in February. Other occupation categories experienced decreases in job openings including financial specialists and accountants (-9.2 percent) and journalists and media workers (-8.3 percent).

Additionally, only 36% share a positive impression of the general business climate for 2012 (40% decline from 2011). When asked about their greatest career-related concerns for 2012, shrinking executive opportunities was the most commonly cited concern (48%), and global economic and political turbulence was second (18%). Despite the challenging forecast, 65% of survey respondents reported they are more willing to make a career move in 2012 than they were in 2011.

 Pay close attention to #s 2, 3 & 7:

  1. You face 1,000 competitors: Today, an average 1,000 candidates apply for each advertised job. Even small companies get 500 applicants from a Craigslist ad.
  2. Employers search resumes differently than we search Google: When you and I search Google, we search 1 or 2 criteria (3 – 4 if it’s a really detailed search) and we don’t mind that we get millions of possible matches. Most employers only want 50 matches, so recruiters/HR reps search for 7 – 10 criteria.
  3. Odds: Your chances of matching 7 – 10 criteria using the same (or tweaked) resume are next to zip.
  4. Government compliance: Companies use ATSs to show DOL auditors that candidates are selected for interview by objective criteria.
  5. Stuck in the database: Even the most qualified candidates get stuck in the database if they don’t match employer search criteria.
  6. ATS’ match exact words: ATSs aren’t built to match different words with the same meaning.
  7. ATSs don’t keyword search cover letters: Executives from the top 10 ATS companies revealed that their clients install ATSs to only keyword search one document – the resume. If you use a cover letter to show how your experience makes you the perfect candidate … you’re demonstrating it on the wrong document.
